Best Management Practices (BMPS)

To reduce pollution, farmers can implement cover crops, buffer zones, conservation tillage, manure management plans, and precision agriculture to minimize runoff and protect water quality.
In Pennsylvania, Best Management Practices (BMPs) are implemented to reduce agricultural pollution and protect watersheds. Here are some of the most effective BMPs:
1. Cover Crops

What it does: Planted during the off-season (e.g., winter rye, clover) to prevent soil erosion and absorb excess nutrients.

Benefit: Reduces nitrogen and phosphorus runoff, improves soil health, and enhances water retention.
2. Riparian Buffers

What it does: Vegetative strips (grasses, trees, or shrubs) along streams and rivers act as natural filters.

3. Conservation Tillage (No-Till & Reduced Tillage)
