ATOMS

DAY 1 - ATOMIC STRUCTURE

WARM-UP (7 MIN)

In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date. 

Task:  *Complete the Musical Warm-Up:  "What is that?"*

WARM-UP DISCUSSION (3 MIN)

*What does it mean to say that an atom is the smallest particle of an element?  Are there different atoms?*

LAB:  *BUILDING FUZZY ATOMS* (15 MIN)

In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date.  FOR LABS, IF NO SHEET IS PROVIDED, YOU MUST RECORD STEP TITLES AND YOUR ANSWERS IN YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK 


Purpose:  To help us understand atomic structure.

Materials:  Felt pads, Felt Pam Balls of different sizes and colors, Pipe cleaners of different colors.

Procedure:  

  1. STEP 1:  THE NOTES:  First, in your notebooks, write the vocabulary definitions and key concepts for the lesson.  They are located in "THE NOTES" Section of this web page.

  2. STEP 2:  WHAT'S FUZZY AN WHAT'S PIPE-ISH?:  When looking at your materials:

    1. Draw the big puff balls of one color and label them ​"Protons." 

    2. Draw the big puff balls of another color and label them "Neutrons." 

    3. Draw the small puff balls of a specific color and label them "electrons." 

    4. Draw the green pipe cleaners and label them "first orbital." 

    5. Draw the white pipe cleaners and label them "outer orbitals."

  3. STEP 3:  BUILDING

    1. Take 1 Proton and place it in the middle of your felt pad.  

    2. Then build your first orbital around it with green pipe cleaners.  You should only need 2.  

    3. Place 1 Electron on the first orbital line.

    4. You've created an atom of the element Hydrogen.  Please draw and label an atom of Hydrogen in your science notebook.

  4. STEP 4: CREATING LITHIUM

    1. On the periodic table, Lithium has an atomic number of 3, so we know it has 3 protons.  If you didn't know that, you know it now.  :-)  ​

    2. Write this:  PROTONS AND NEUTRONS MAKE UP THE MASS OF THE ATOM.  PROTONS AND NEUTRONS HAVE THE SAME MASS.

    3. If the mass number for Lithium is 6, and we know Lithium has 3 Protons, we know that Lithium has 3 Protons and 3 Neutrons, because 3+3=6.  On the felt, please add 3 neutrons and 3 protons to the nucleus.  

    4. Atoms have the same number of electrons as they do protons.  Please add two orbitals to the felt.  The first orbital can hold a maximum of 2 electrons and you need to fill it first.  FILL THAT ORBITAL BY PLACING 2 ELECTRONS ON IT. . The next orbital can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.  Since you only have one more to add, please add that last electron to the second orbital.  Draw and label the Lithium atom in your science notebook.

    5. Clean up your area and make sure all the parts are back where they began.

    6. Go to the following simulation to keep building atoms.  SIMULATION LINK You may need to download it to use it.  See how far you can get, but DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR SCHOOLOGY ASSESSMENT.

    7. Finally, in your science notebook.  research what lithium is used for and write it.

THE NOTES:  DAY 1 VOCABULARY (10 MIN)

*Write these down in your notebooks!*

Nucleus - the very small center core of an atom

Protons - the positively charged particles in the nucleus (+)

Neutrons - the neutrally charged particles in the nucleus. (no charge)

Electrons - the particles that move rapidly around the nucleus and have a negative electric charge. (e⁻)

Orbitals/Shells - Imaginary guidelines for where the electrons are located.

KEY CONCEPT - Atoms are made of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons.
