Purpose: To exhibit the fundamental building blocks of matter. We need to compare and contrast atoms, to elements, to molecules, to chemical bonds.
Materials: Molecule Kits
Procedure:
STEP 1: DETERMINING ATOMS AND ELEMENTS: Create a chart in your notebook that identifies what each color ball represents. Each ball represents an atom, but what element does the atom represent?
STEP 2: BONDING: Take one of the pegs and attach two atoms of the same element together. Draw it in your notebook and label it. What is this called? What does the peg represent? Label the peg.
STEP 3: SUBSTANCES: Look at your resulting substance from STEP 2. Did you create a new substance? Look back at your previous definition for substance. Are two atoms of oxygen bonded together the same thing as 3 oxygen atoms bonded together? Research O2 and O3 online to determine your answer.
STEP 4: Create 4 molecules and make sure all the holes in the atom spheres are filled with chemical bond pegs/springs. Draw those molecules and write the elements present. Also, write the number of atoms of each element. Example: (Picture of Molecule) 2 Oxygen Atoms | 1 Carbon Atom
THE NOTES: DAY 2 VOCABULARY (10 MIN)
Element - a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means.
Atom - the basic particle from which all elements are made.
Chemical Bond - a force of attraction between two atoms
Molecules - groups of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
KEY CONCEPT- Elements are the simplest substances.
