THIS IS CALLED A STATIONS LAB. YOU WILL HAVE 5 MINUTES AT EACH STATION. USE THEM WISELY AND KEEP QUIET.
Purpose: To exhibit the fundamental building blocks of matter. We will review for a quiz with this lab.
Materials: Molecule Kits, Chocolate Milk, Trail Mix, 10 Nuts, 10 Bolts, 10 Washers
Procedure:
STATION 1: HETEROGENEOUS OR HOMOGENEOUS: Take a look at the numbered mixtures. Determine if they are Heterogeneous or Homogeneous. Be sure to explain why you picked your answer.
STATION 2: BUILDING COMPOUNDS: Use your notes to write the definition of a compound and the definition of chemical formula down on your lab sheet. As a group, I want you to pretend that the bolts are Carbon Atoms, the nuts are Hydrogen Atoms, and the Washers are Oxygen Atoms. As a group, I want you to build a model of CO2 and CH4. Mr. Amen will sign that you have built these compounds when you have finished.
STATION 3: COUNTING ATOMS: Using your notes, write the definition of a molecule. Write the definition of an element. Write the definition of an atom. View the following Chemical formulas of specific molecules and write the number of elements present. Write the number of atoms present.
STATION 4: PHYSICAL VS. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: Use your notes to write the definition for physical properties and chemical properties. View the scenarios present and decide whether they display physical or chemical properties.
STATION 5: HAVING A SENSE OF APPLICATION: In your own words, explain in 3 sentences why chemistry is important to mankind. Talk about what kind of companies might include chemists.
STATION 6: ILLUSTRATING KNOWLEDGE: In front of you, are the model kits. Use them to illustrate a mixture, a compound, and an element. Show me that you know the difference between the 3 by drawing the results on your lab sheet.
STATION 7: ORGANIZE COMPOUNDS, MIXTURES, ELEMENTS: There are 9 scenarios present. Organize them into the correct categories. Elements, Compounds or Mixtures? Write them on your lab sheets.
