Today's warm-up will start off with a musical drawing of______.
LAB: MAGNETIC POTENTIAL ENERGY LAB
(10 MIN)

Purpose: To demonstrate the effect of magnetic potential energy.
Materials: 12-inch piece of string tied to a paper clip
Ruler
Several magnets
Procedure:
1. Tie the string to one end of the paper clip.
2. With one hand, hold the paper clip and raise it up to the magnet letting it stick to the surface touching the end of the paper clip to the surface of the magnet.
3. Slowly pull the paper clip away from the magnet holding only to the string.
4. Slowly pull the end of the string until the paper clip is suspended in the air (it will look like magic).
5. Continue slowly pulling the paper clip away from the magnet until the paper clip falls.
6. With a clear ruler, have a 2nd teammate measure the largest distance the paper clip can move away from the magnet. Be as exact as possible!
7. Do this 5 times and calculate the average distance the paper clip can move away from the magnet before falling.

NOTES:
Magnet- any material that attracts iron and materials that contain iron
Magnetic force- the attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles
Magnetic pole- any magnet, no matter what its shape, has two ends, each end is called a magnetic pole
Magnetic field- the are of magnetic force around a magnet
Magnetic field lines- invisible lines that map out the magnetic field around a magnet
Magnetic Energy- the attraction between two objects made of iron
Magnets attract iron and materials that contain iron. Magnets attract and repel other magnets. In addition, one part of a magnet will always point north when allowed to swing freely.
Magnetic field lines spread out from one pole, curve around the magnet, and return to the other pole.
Magnetic poles that are unlike attract each other, and magnetic poles that are alike repel each other.
