NEWTON'S LAWS
DAY 1
WARM-UP (7 MIN)
In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date.
Task: *Complete the Musical Warm-Up: "What is that?"*
WARM-UP DISCUSSION (3 MIN)
What stops objects from moving? What causes objects to move?
LAB: *FLIPPIN WITH INERTIA* - BRYLEE TERESKA
In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date. FOR LABS, IF NO SHEET IS PROVIDED, YOU MUST RECORD STEP TITLES AND YOUR ANSWERS IN YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK
Purpose: To see how inertia takes place in flipping a water bottle
Materials: Empty plastic water bottle and water
Procedure:
STEP 1: Make a hypothesis to see which water amount will be the easiest to flip. (75%, 50%, 25%)
Make another hypothesis to see how many times it will take you to land the bottle with each percentage of water.
STEP 2: Fill the bottle with 75% water.
Flip the bottle until you land it. Record how many times it took you to land it on a data table.
STEP 3: Repeat step 1 but with 50% water.
STEP 4: Repeat step 1 but with 25% water.
Conclusion: Is it easier to flip the water bottle and land it with more or less water? Why?
Explain how your actions in this lab apply to Newton's First and Second Law.
THE NOTES: DAY 1 VOCABULARY (10 MIN)
*Write these down in your notebooks!*
Inertia - the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
Acceleration - the rate at which velocity changes (both speed and direction)
Acceleration = Final Speed - Initial Speed / Time
Newton’s first law - an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object moving at a constant velocity will continue moving at a constant velocity, unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Newton’s second law of motion - acceleration depends on the object’s mass and on the net force acting on the object. (Law of Inertia)
EVALUATION (10 MIN)
We'll wrap it up here with today's assessment in your learning management system. Feel free to study your notes and/or the videos below. We always recommend viewing the videos the night before the lesson.
