LAB:  ROCK CANDY MAKING

Chemical Reaction and Physical Reaction


1. Purpose- To observe physical change and a chemical reaction


2. Materials- 1 ½ cups cane sugar         ½ water

              glass jar                              pencil

                     food coloring             string


3. Procedure-


Step 1: Combine your ingredients

Pour 1 ½ cups of cane sugar into a glass beaker.

Step 2: Add ½ cup of water to the sugar.


Step 2: Heat and stir solution

Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

Stir the solution.

Microwave the stirred solution for 2 minutes on high.

Add 5 drops of food coloring of your choices.


Step 3: Prepare the String

Cut the string so it is only about ⅔ of an inch shorter than the container.

Take a clean string and tie it around the pencil.


Step 4: Starting the process

Lower the string into the solution and have the pencil sit on the lid.

Let the string sit in the solution for 5 minutes.

Take out the string and let it completely dry on a piece of wax paper.

Allow the solution to cool to room temp.


Step 5: Wait for your rock Candy

Slowly lower the string into the solution.

Let it sit in the solution for about a week.

When your ready lift the pencil and take out your rock candy.
